Meh, you can’t win Le Mans overall in a car based off a road-legal car anymore, and Ford wanted to maintain those road car ties. I’m okay with it.

Good to know you don’t care about anything other than the overall.

I must have missed the 1966 GT40 sales brochures.

I enjoy GT racing as well. Just not the OMG AMERICA WINS. Seriously, the Corvette has been stupid dominate in GT for 15 years. We’ve been here a while. A US team on top of the GT podium is old hat.

The GT40 was a “road car” in the way that all prototypes of that era were “road cars”. Only on technicalities.

Here’s a 1966 GT40 add talking about le mans.
Corvette has never dominated GTE competition. The last time they could be considered to dominate was in GT1 when they were the only factory effort in the category. It’s not about an American team winning, it is about the return of a legendary manufacturer to le mans. It’s the same thing that it was when Porsche returned in 2014.

It was a road car in the same way the new GT is a road car. They were both constructed so that Ford could compete at le mans.

The GT40, by today's standards, would be an LMP1 car.

One was constructed to win lemans.
The other was constructed to sell $450,000 cars.

A road car that’s not on the road yet, and required the other GTE manufacturers agreeing to a waiver to let the GT compete.

I’m not saying the original GT40 was a road car. I’m saying this time around Ford wanted it to be related to a road car, and they couldn’t do that in the P1 class.

They also had to agree for the 488.

Do you want a MK III from Ford or a MK I from Wyer Ltd?
And the GT40 ran in the sportscar class in 1968 and 1969, not the prototype class.
